Review: 'LAZARUS'
'FASHION/ MURDER'

-  Label: 'Something In Construction'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'October 2005'

Our Rating:
LAZARUS has been described as 'a purveyor of shimmeringly sad psychedelic folk songs of the lost American dream.' In his new release, double A side 'Fashion/Murder' and 'Singing To Thieves' the first part of this statement can be seen in abundance.

On 'Fashion/Murder' there is beautiful, slow guitar playing with melancholic vocals over the top but instead of talking about the lost American dream the lyrics seem to be saying something about wishing that someone(possibly close and dear to Lazarus's heart) would get out of bed, and the fact that things are turning into plastic. Maybe something has been lost in translation. I'm not entirely sure.

Flip side, 'Singing To The Thieves' is a fast paced tune with up beat acoustic guitar strumming, passionate singing all backed by keyboards. Unlike 'Fashion/Murder' it doesn't linger over vocal harmonies, or wallow in the intricacies of the melody. Instead the drum beat helps drive the song along, and reminds you strongly of something that singer/songwriter Bright Eyes would offer to his fans.

These are two very different songs which complement each other well, and although the description of Lazarus is not entirely right (on the lost American dream front) this is a good thing as the subject has been played to death a million times before!
