Review: 'PARISMAN'
'A PLACE THAT GLOWS'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '7th November 2005'

Our Rating:
It's hard to take in the idea of "A Place That Glows" being shadowy West Yorks heroes-in-waiting PARISMAN'S debut single, because they've been big news around here for the past three years or so. Indeed, if you do your homework, you'll discover they've already untethered three self-released EPS ("Responsible For Everything", "A Lesson In The Art Of Balance" and "The Answer To Example 1") which include a brace of classic tracks such as "Inspiration And Tar" and "Loosely Connected".

But no matter. Even if you've only just come down with the last shower, it's always a good time to start listening to Parisman and "A Place That Glows" is indeed a fine 'official' first single. As Peely would no doubt have said, it fades in and makes its' spectral presence felt in a mercurial, spacy'n'spooked kinda way. The guitars tingle, the keyboards drift in from an asteroid belt between Neptune and Pluto and James Scholes and Shaun Halloran trade diabolically fascinating lyrics like "If you want to save your breath, 'cos it'll be your last" that sound like the amusingly macabre threats Blofeld always made in the Bond films.

B-side "Flying Square Man" is equally hard to pin down and wigged-out, though sounds a little warmer and more inviting and demonstrates Parisman are keen students of Dr.Moog's finest machines. It will probably help Parisman gain some kind of odious 'nu-Prog' tag or other in these lack-of-attention-span days, but - like starsailing southern counterpoints of a kind The Mystery Jets - marks Parisman out as astral travellers keen to strap in and experience their very own sonic journey without maps.

But I digress. Analytical waffle aside, "A Place That Glows" is as good a place as any for the late starters to get incandecent. It's merely a tantalising glimpse of what Parisman can achieve, but one which will continue to burn brightly indeed.
