Review: 'HIJERA'
'THE SEEDY EP'

-  Label: 'www.hijera.co.uk'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'September 2005'

Our Rating:
First off, HIJERA are a quality band. With their fusion of indie (baggy), space-age-psychedelia, drum and bass, acid jazz, funk, elecro-pop, and Lord knows what else, I'll be surprised if they aren't signed pronto and brought to the attention of alternative music lovers in the UK.

This E.P is dirty, catchy, interesting and very clever. Bands such as Happy Mondays and Primal Scream managed to successfully bridge the gap between dance music and rock, and its clear that Hijera have gone down the same road, and they've done it bloody well. You can see where these guys have come from influence-wise, and anyone could list a number of bands who they sound like, but it wouldn't scratch the surface and I don't think it would do their unique sound any justice.

This demo E.P is stunningly stylish and layered with powerful effects - on listening to the guitar-heavy tracks such as "Ten Thousand Eyes", you just want to hit the dance floor and start gyrating. With the more trippy songs, you can imagine them playing this on a Barbarella-esque trendy space-ship hurtling through space.

"Skin Deep" has a cosmic feel to it, man, but as soon as you've settled into the swing of it, out of nowhere there's some serious genre-bending going on and they throw a load of dirty funk in your direction. Fabulous.

I must admit though, a couple of the tracks did start to sound a bit similar, but given the diversity within the songs themselves, its not exactly a hanging offence. And if you like their style anyway, then you're sorted.

I bet these guys are brilliant live and on listening to this E.P I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for them. Watch this space...
