Review: 'MINOTAUR SHOCK'
'MUESLI (EP)'

-  Label: '4AD (www.4ad.com)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'OCTOBER 2005'

Our Rating:
The newest release from Brighton based artist MINOTAUR SHOCK sounds like a confusion of sounds randomly thrown together to make a tune.

Man it sounds good though! With electronic beats mixed with synths, flutes, clarinets, static and what sounds like steel drums and an accordion the opening track, 'Muesli' is a jerky, offbeat affair which brings to mind (bizarrely, don't ask why) chickens pecking dirt from the ground (I told you not to ask!).

Second track 'Beau Nash' is a far more structured electronic offering with a proper tune and a drum beat and the like. It's pretty to listen to, something to have on in the background when other things are going on, but a slight disappointment after the originality and quirkiness of 'Muesli.'

The EP sounds familiar, and as it carries on playing, I realise it's because it reminds me of the kind of stuff that Kieran Hebden- the genius behind Four Tet- would produce. It has the same electronic,
put-together-from-sound-samples-on-a-computer quality to it, and the end result is much the same- a little less 'out there' perhaps, but still incredibly good.

The final track on this four track release is definitely my favourite, with fat squidgy sounds mixed together with sharper erratic notes and a funky drumbeat. Called 'Ta' this and 'Muesli' defiantly stand out on the EP as tunes which have something different, special and oh so very brilliant. Minotaur Shock is a man to keep an ear out for!
