Our Rating:
VATICAN JET arc through the crowded part of the guitar band firmament dominated by FRANZ FERDINAND and KAISER CHIEFS. Their sound is recognisably contemporary and Roger Tyers has a voice that stands out in a crowd. Their bouncy song is as memorable as a pop song should be. It’s danceable and it’s singable. It has some clout. I wonder a bit why bands who aren’t on major labels make music that sounds as if it is … clearly the industry can spot the outsider origins and ignores this kind of thing just as firmly as it ignores the avant and post garde. But denizens of the indie night should pay attention and fresh music fiends should make further investigations. These canny chancers are developing some pedigree.

THE SMOKESTACKS are an utterly genuine article. The sound is a little less clued up than Vatican Jet. But to my ears anyway they sound the fresher for it. They play music to please a roomful of relaxed and beery people who enjoy decent guitar playing and a confident good humour. They call their sound retro, but its better than that: it’s old-fashioned. From the pubrock name to the happy loser rhetoric of alcohol's power to change to the world, THE SMOKESTACKS put up two biker fingers to the world of anxious style spotters and play a good firm rattle of slightly mutant, big fun garage rock.
