Review: 'WHITE LIES'
'THE HELEN SEASON (EP)'

-  Label: 'Self-Released'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'November 2005'

Our Rating:
'The Helen Season EP' is the debut EP offering from young Cambridge band WHITE LIES who are not to be confused with another young rock band out there also called, er, White Lies. Only the other lot aren't from Cambridge and are signed to Pronoia Records. Anyway, opening track 'Under The Lines' is a slow, heavy tune, with screaming guitar solos and deep, passionate singing.

The song builds up in volume and intensity, before finishing somewhat abruptly, but this sudden end contrasts nicely with the following song, 'Model People,' a gentle two minute rock track sounding similar to early Lemonheads material.

For a band with the average age of 15, lead singer and bassist Matt May has a very mature voice, which is seen (sorry, heard) at its best on 'Helen Season.' A slow and beautiful ballad with heartfelt singing, backed by melodic piano and guitars; this is definitely the stand out track on the EP and the one thing here demonstrating beyond why White Lies could just be a band to keep an ear out for in the future.
