Review: 'MILLIONAIRE'
'CHAMPAGNE'

-  Label: 'PLAY IT AGAIN SAM'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'NOVEMBER 2002'-  Catalogue No: 'PIAS077CD'

Our Rating:
Hotly-tipped Belgians MILLIONAIRE were personally invited by QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE frontman Josh Homme to support on a European tour that's still ongoing as your correspondent scribbles.

It's no surprise thay caught his eagle eye, either, as "Champagne" is a notable single, and a startling virginity-breaker as far as this writer's concerned, previously knowing only that Millionaire include ex-dEUS personnel.

Housed in a sleeve neatly poised between seduction and tack, "Champagne" is a potent concoction that you'll definitely rememer as your head throbs the following morning. Initially, it throws you off guard, as the lengthy (2 minutes plus) intro - crammed full of the kind of sleazy, dangerous riffing beloved of QOTSA themselves - suggests this could be an instrumental. When Tim Vanhamel's helium-compression vocals enter the picture and the band bring it down via some bizarre, Pere Ubu-ey synth wibbling, though, it goes to another level altogether.

The disconnected (and aptly-titled) "Petty Thug" and an even-more-visceral live take of "Champagne" complete the all-too-brief picture, but if - like this writer - you're already craving for a black leather glove full of illicit thrills, then make for their recent "Outside The Simian Flock" album.

Immediately, though, try "Champagne". It's a fine vintage, but be warned: you may not be responsible for your actions afterwards.
