Review: 'BESSON, WILLIAM'
'London, Soho, Madame Jo Jo's, 15th December 2005'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
WILLIAM BESSON headed up tonight's line up at Madame JoJo’s, Soho. It’s a five song set that should have been longer.

Produced, written and composed in a bedroom in East London, his sound has been compared to Portishead, Depeche Mode, Beck and Cake. The lyrics remind me more of the Smiths, downbeat and critical. The sound did unlock a memory of The The’s music and a bit of Bowie. As albums that defined moments and have still lasted the distance. He is a welcome step from the slightly generic tunes that this year has produced.

He has a slight frame and part of the surprise is the power of his voice. It is a warm, sonorous sound that enhances the electric back beat and lets the lyrics work without too much effort.

He calls himself electri-pop, a mixture of electronic, trip-hop and pop. The first three tacks let you in gently and get steadily more electric towards the end of the set. The live guitar brings out the beat and a slightly more dance track feel to ‘By my side’, which works fantastically live and ended the gig with a flourish.

There is plenty of room for an even bigger sound and it was a shame there was no time for more that night. I look forward to hearing more in the new year.

You can find William’s music on I-Tunes. Also check out williambesson.com for future gigs and info.
