Review: 'YOUNG KNIVES, THE'
'THE DECISION'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'December 2005'

Our Rating:
Remember the round in Shooting Stars where Vic Reeves would do a song in the style of a pub singer? Well It seems singer/guitarist Henry Dartnell has let it inform his jumpy, almost spoken vocal delivery- that and Justin Hawkins falsetto. Yes it sounds truly awful, but it really isn't- it's brilliant

This single from the Trangressive-signed trio THE YOUNG KNIVES is quirky, indie-disco-rock. It's jerky and energetic - angular guitars and wiry bass, but never trying to be something it's not. Truthfully it sounds like the band look- you know it really shouldn't be cool (think shabby geography-teacher chic) but it has a distinctive non-fashion charm.

Its' infectious melodies and sounds are packaged with it's dry humour in a distinctive, interesting way. "The Decision" is undoubtedly an oddity- but knowingly so, it's clever but it never feels pretentious or forced. Whilst the music feels 'contemporary' the tracks wry appeal rests with the lyrics "The horses in the New Forest, are running in their Sunday best" - well.... quite!
