Our Rating:
Can anyone possibly think of The Smiths, but (credibly) happier? I think that Birmingham based PAISLEY RIOT may have achieved this with their debut EP, “Devil Only Knows”. Oh, and think The Libertines and/or Babyshambles (but with less smack I should imagine) and you’re on the right lines.

It’s a nice cluster of Mod-Punk and bouncy indie, with bubble-gum lyrics to lighten up our lives: “She took me out to a crackerjack store/stole my cherry and a whole lot more” - what fantastic imagary, illicit love in a supermarket, beautiful. Shane Morley (vox, guitar) even sounds like Fergal Sharkey, a good thing that’s hard to find [sorry].

The band as a whole are a great package, the rhythm section really drives the sound forward, Rob Pallatina pounds and rolls his way through the EP marvellously, and the interplay between the drums and bass are as tight as my Gran’s mouth after she’s been sucking lemons. Don't ask.

Paisley Riot are fairly new, having formed in 2004, and are already obtaining accolades left right and centre, and have been compared to heavy weights such as Razorlite, The Jam, The Coral, and the like. Definitely ones to watch for 2006.

Also worth watching out for is the somewhat predictable "We Predict a Riot" orientated headlines regarding this band in the press. The Keiser Chiefs have a lot to answer for...
