Review: 'FALL OUT BOY'
'SUGAR, WE'RE GOIN' DOWN'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'January 2006'

Our Rating:
Welcome FALL OUT BOY - your new radio-friendly rock band. They're playing all over mainstream Radio 1 and they've just completed a sell out tour of the UK- it takes only a short listen to this single to understand why. It's instantly singable but without feeling you've heard it all before. it's anthemic but without losing any of it's 'rock' credentials. Developed in the Mid-West away from any specific scene, this Chicago four-piece have created an infectious track that rightly deserves the major record label interest that it has attracted.

The rhythm section throb and drive, but without being overly aggressive- it isn't frenetic or manic, instead they adopt an energetic but confident stride. The guitars similarly have all the distorted darkness of any hardcore track, but it's harnessed and channeled in a melodic way. Whilst they are not the first band to do this, the vocals alone bring Jimmy Eat World comparisons, they still sound fresh and interesting. Lyrically it doesn't simply traipse out the obvious, but spitting out lines such as "a loaded gun complex, cock it and pull it" will undoubtedly push all the right buttons for those in search of something a bit darker.

That is really the beauty of the band, they retain the feel of an authentic rock band, but with a knack for a killer chorus that should have the Lostprophets quaking in their boots. Sure, there is every possibility they could sell out, or prove to be a one-trick pony, but for once, a great single is getting the attention it deserves.
