Sounding at times like a George Harrison tribute band circa ‘All Things Must Pass,’ and at others like David Bowie, ‘Instant Happiness’ is a chameleon of an album, constantly changing style, pace and influences.
At times this can be a good thing, when slow, melancholy and slightly immature songs, such as ‘The Food Song’ (a tune which basically goes through Reynolds shopping list) switch to more up-beat, jaunty melodies with the occasional uncanny Bowie-isms and funky bass lines heard best in ‘On The Radio’and ‘Take Me To The Moon.’
But, the changes of pace and style in the album become rather
tiresome and Reynolds blatant thievery of George Harrison's trademark lush, many layered slide guitar sound mixed with rock songs which wouldn’t be out of place in a 70s rock band leads to an album which is disappointing and frustrating to listen to.
