Our Rating:
I always fret in annoyance when press blurb kicks off with statements like “Mod X’s strong artistic personality attracts advertising agencies’ attention”. Anyone else spot the anachronism of art and advertising?

Frenchman MOD X has been knocking around since 2000 and last year scored a clubland hit with ‘The Quest’ remixed by Brit DJ Paul Murphy. This time around he’s roped in fellow Gaul Kid Loco (who created one of my all-time fave downtempo albums with his 1997 debut ‘A Grand Love Story’) to add some spit and polish to his single ‘Picture Man’.

MOD X’s solo effort is based around a looping jumpy tourette’s beat that never really creates a groove nor gets out of first gear, sounding like one small idea given too much of an outing and far too pleased with itself: a touch of the Emperor’s New Clothes and a poor man’s Jazzanova.

Luckily Kid Loco’s Reconstructed Mix gives the track some bite and infectiousness by adding Salsa flavours and just enough Handbag to bring a smile to the face and a shimmy to the dance-floor.

Nice.
