Review: 'MCCULLOCH, ROB'
'PLANET OF MY OWN'

-  Label: 'GLADRAG'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '2006'-  Catalogue No: 'GRCL05'

Our Rating:
ROB MCCULLOCH is a young musician from Bolton who obviously is in thrall with the likes of Oasis and The Verve and particularly the panoramic emotional posturing of Richard Ashcroft.

Opening track 'Planet Of My Own' has wah wah guitar and orchestrated strings and a muscular epic rock structure but falls short of its intended lofty heights by virtue of sounding like a Robbie Williams track. The piano ballad 'Hard to Breathe' continues the similarities with 'The Robster' (as that ineffectual TV vacuum Ferne Cotton insists on calling him) while the acoustic guitar of 'Mr. Nice' has Stereophonics written all over it.

There is song-writing talent within Mr. McCulloch but he needs to stretch himself beyond these obvious musical reference points and find a sound that doesn't hark back to the unwelcome heyday of 'Dad Rock' circa 1997.
