This is ACE!!!!!!

What you want more? Where do I start? The single version of FIELD MUSIC’S ‘You’re Not Supposed To” opens with a beautiful vocal arrangement of the (rather beautiful hymn) ‘Abide With Me’, a clever display of harmonisation, but given the context of the song (don’t do as you’re told) is also very tongue in cheek.

It’s punky, sharp, and angular – but the chords are in (OHMIGOSH) a major key! The tone is sunny and cheery! They’ve got this cynical W&H lush using exclamation marks like a yappy puppy! Oh look at me, I’m gushing… (!!!!)

Over the catchy, hooky tunes, flows a swirling cello arrangement, (with an inspired ‘call and answer’ section between the strings and vocals – man oh man this is one happy reviewer) and delightful ringing pianos, it’s completely adorable. Some things they list as things you’re not supposed to do include: Make music for money (oh the irony within irony – this could go
on forever); appear in another band’s video (The Futureheads, J Xaverre and This Ain’t Vegas all appear in their video); and forget your roots (they all sing in broad Mackem accents).

They have the intelligent chirpiness of the Small Faces, and the pop sensibilities of any modern indie group. There is an almost cartoon quality that goes nicely with the obvious bags of personality that this band clearly have. All in all it’s the perfect pop song. Great stuff.
