Review: 'SCATTERGOOD, POLLY'
'Home Demos'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
At times sounding like a pre-pubescent Guy Garvey, this London based singer/songwriter has been on the brink of airplay for a while and this demo proves why. In five tracks she takes the listener on an emotional journey through heartbreaking, defiant romantic angst to, well, a cover of 'Puff the magic Dragon' (I know, but trust me, it works).

Scattergood possesses an engaging vocal that makes you feel each impassioned lyric, and it is on the songs where the production is stripped bare that she really shine's, nowhere more so than the stunning 'Poem Song'. The melody has a basic, nursery rhyme quality that provides an interesting juxtaposition to the raw pain and passion of the vocals. On 'Can't Let Go' the euphoric drum beat, and chilled out trip hop vibe offers up a different sound that one feels is more radio friendly, and would be a welcome accompaniment to any sun set. 'Dirty Blonde' is the rock chick daughter of Cher's 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves'- a tale of ill-advised romance where again her voice carries the music to great effect.

I once heard Scattergood compared to KT Tunstall, but that, to me, is labeling for the sake of it, but if labeling is your bag I'd opt instead to describe her sound as the musical equivalent of a naked mud wrestle between the songs of Tori Amos and Kate Bush- beautiful. Either way, after recently signing to Mute Records hopefully it won't be too long before you can judge for yourselves.
