Review: 'Reggie Buie Trio, The'
'The First Time'

-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '2005'

Our Rating:
The Reggie Buie Trio (http://www.reggiebuie.com) is a jazz act with soul.

This group of top-drawer musicians are masters of creating a mood, and it's usually an uplifting one. If you're bummed out, here's a band that can make you smile, leaving you grinning and feeling good for a couple of days.

"Nica's Dream" is over five minutes of festive piano and spine-tickling percussion. With it, you can sense the group's chemistry. These are talented players working and jamming together for the tightest groove possible. On the sizzling cover of the immortal "Georgia," Buie and his pals aim for a slow burn, and the scorching heat of summer in the South is felt with precision and perspiration.

Buie's version of "Betcha, By Golly Wow" will probably receive the most attention, a timeless love song that has taken its place among the genre's all-time greatest. Although its good (this tune is so elegantly crafted that it's virtually immune from a poor remake), it doesn't display the Trio's strengths. Furthermore, the added vocals seems unnecessary, especially since it is in the back of the mix. Less commercial but more artistically impressive are the cozy "My Romance" and the playful "There Is No Other Love."

Classy, sophisticated, and velvety smooth, the Reggie Buie Trio make a lasting impression on their debut album.
