With the catchiest name I've heard since the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Edinburgh four-piece DENIED SONS OF IGLESIAS are currently causing ripples in the ever-growing Edinburgh rock pool.
Influences range from Queens Of The Stone Age and Pavement to the much under-valued Dinosaur Jr. but, on first listen to this three track debut, you'd be forgiven for thinking the Foo Fighters have dispensed with Dave Grohl and brought in a Scottish doppelganger.
'Live And Learn' is a classic case of the much copied Seattle-influenced rock sound. Bright, brash and with a hint of a pop melody, the band certainly possess the talent to pull it off; and pull it off they do. There's enough rough edges to appease the hardened rockers among you, but, on this evidence, it seems their main strength lies in their forays into the melodic left-field territory.
'Ill At Ease' is the least impressive of the three tracks, sounding, as it does, like a Nirvana b-side. But, all is forgiven, as the final track 'First Sign Of Madness' proves the Denied Sons do, indeed, have what it takes to pack a punch. Powerful driving rhythms are complimented by strong vocals, which, if I'm not very much mistaken, have a hint of Black Sabbath-era Ozzy about them. No bad thing, I'm sure you'll agree.

The band's live shows are gathering interest from various strands of the local media and, going by what I've heard so far, it won't be long before they're appearing in the nationals. Accomplished debut.
