Review: 'HEY! NEGRITA'
'CAN'T WALK AWAY (EP)'

-  Label: 'FAT FOX'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '24th April 2006'-  Catalogue No: 'FSMCD016'

Our Rating:
UK based Alt-Country band HEY NEGRITA follow their critically acclaimed previous release “We Are Catfish”, with this rather lush EP “Can’t Walk Away”.

All the components for intrigue and interest are there – kudos from collaborations with a wide range of artists including Chris Coco and Lemon Jelly (who remixed ‘Losing You’ on their EP – it’s lovely); and a recovered heroin addict for a front-man (not to belittle his experience, if anything it’s a big hats off).

The title track is nice, but maybe a bit too heavy on the electric piano (more "cruise ship" than Alt. Country), and it’s a bit on the boring side. However, “Lust and Bones” is a lot more ethereal, and it is on this track that Hey Negrita come into their own. The aforementioned “Losing You” is a gently-fried guitar track, where LemonJelly have stamped their characteristic noise all over it. Not a particularly imaginative remix, but pleasant nonetheless.

However, given the amount of harrowing life experience that is billed about this band, the music is surprisingly gentle and very poppy. So if you’re looking for amphetamine-addled rockabiliy death-country, then Hey Negrita are not for you. If however, you’re looking for something a lot more relaxed, and which errs on the Radio 2 MOR spectrum, then this band are certainly worth checking out.
