Swedish band The Perishers offer up a slice of melancholic indie cake. It’s a well structured song with all the classic elements, but nothing new. There’s no attempt to break away from the Coldplay/Travis etc. stable & it ends up sounding very, very derivative. Turgid guitars, whining vocals & shoegazing mentality abounds – so expect to see them in the top 10 soon.
I’m sure it will get a lot of radio play & be a huge hit with the “safe” stations & consumers who actually believe it when the Indie broadsheets say things like “the White Stripes have re-invented rock n’ roll – again!”. For people who don’t like to be challenged by music, buy it – you’ll love it. For those with a more eclectic palette, it will probably be one of those songs that elicit groans of contempt when heard on daytime radio for the 30th time that day.
