Review: 'BONSAI KITTENS'
'THE SHORTBREAD AGREEMENT EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
This is a third release from the semi-feral BONSAI KITTENS. Generally at home in house parties and small upstairs rooms, the Yamaha QY20-toting female duo have been a hidden treasure of Leeds music since 2003's Summer of Whatever-It-Was-That-Year. Sarah and Nikky Badass don’t do the full-on "sign us we're desperate" thing. But they do write and perform songs that make you laugh and clap and force you to consider the possibilities of dancing in your pyjamas.

"Waking Up To Wogan" starts with a sweetly decorated hangover. It flourishes an improbably long melodic build and turns into a paean of devotion for the Euromeister. It has the very same wicked twinkle that Wogan uses to pay his extensive mortgage. Happily the BONSAI KITTEN paw prints are all over it. To whit: infectious tunage, deadpan girly wit, synth with effrontery, scurfy metal guitar workings and bomblets of fun scattered like cherries in a fruit cake. It’s the SHANGRI LAS wearing DEVO plant pot hats on a blind date with Lemmy (who, thankfully, doesn't; show up).

Problems associated with stage hypnotists are generally off limits, electro-popwise. But, bold as you like, THE KITTENS go straight for the compulsive disorders that amber contact lenses could induce in even the most savvy multi-lingual female bass guitarist and wit about town. If only a song like "Magic Eye" could carry the flag at next years Eurovision, victory would be ours!

"La la la la la We're Not Listening" is the recommended lemon popsicle remedy for the office bore. Sung with love, driven by the death wish, it's what the KITTENS do best - harshness with fairness plus a chuckle and a nifty tune.

"Let’s Eat" is a contribution to our modestly developed Japanese education. The lyrics are all (both?) in Japanese and are printed out in full on the very covetable slip card: "li na li na li na li na, itadakimasu" rpt till fade. This one is utterly infectious. I challenge you not to be singing it on the bus the day after you first hear it. They claim it means "I'm jealous. We're about to eat". It sounds great in Japanese – rather like a police siren followed by a chocolate dessert.
