Review: 'DeADDER, LOU'
'SLOW DOWN'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: 'April 16 2006'

Our Rating:
Funky sounding Blues-rock guitar music (with stirring bits of organ and traces of quality horn section) is great to play, but grows less interesting to listen to as the years roll by.

Stalwarts like Buddy Guy can still fill venues and 40 years of back catalogue from Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan and a hundred others gives newcomers plenty to go at. So a new album by another excellent proponent isn’t going to be very high priority for many peole.

Nevertheless LOU DeADDER makes a decent stab at grabbing a stranger's attention. His confident style and well-oiled band are convincing and more than competent. His songwriting is deft without being inspired. His singing wouldn’t be a band's first choice in terms of vocal colour and expressiveness, but in a world of guitarists who like to sing he definitely holds his own. If the band on this CD turned up at your local Thursday night pub band spot you would be delighted. Knocked out even. It certainly isn’t amateur stuff.

The strong message from these 10 songs is that if LOU DeADDER is booked in a venue near you and you have a soft spot for tightly played blues rock with fluent and intelligent guitar playing you would be mad to miss him. There are no duff tracks, and no tedious solos. There are subtle shifts of mood and tempo. There's a nice change of pace on "Believe" (a soulful ballad kind of thing) and the album finishes with something as much jazz as funk ("The Funk Strudel").

At heart, this is music made for the sheer pleasure of making it. The formats and expectations are already there, DeADDER just shows us that there are people who care enough and are proficient enough, to keep the concept going.
