Review: 'RUBICKS'
'Midas'

Our Rating:

This is the second single from London duo RUBICKS.

‘Midas’ follows the critically acclaimed ‘I See You’ with Vanessa Redd’s vocal pitched high and delicate above the surging, dipping synthesiser. The machine-driven track spews out a warped, trance-inducing bile as it teeters briefly on the edge of reason before freefalling star-shaped into a sea of pop perfection.

The understated chorus hook line rhymes its way into your heart and dares you to throw yourself into the sonic abyss. Hang-ups and fears are shed like tears of joy as the eighties-tinted fairground feel hollows out the poison beneath the binary of cold-steel industrial rhythms, and the words are warm against the soundtrack of the cold, hard floor disappearing from under you.

The children’s choir is a masterstroke in keeping them rooted to the ground as our heads are carried off with the flow. This is a beautiful antidote to the times when everything you touch seems destined to turn into shit.
