Review: 'DEARS, THE'
'TICKET TO IMMORTALITY'

-  Label: 'BELLA UNION'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '7th August 2006'-  Catalogue No: 'DEARSCDP122'

Our Rating:
Fans of smart and discerning pop fell head over heels for THE DEARS the last time round and it looks as though it’s going to be much more than merely a dalliance if this new single is indicative of the quality liable to be unleashed by the band’s curiously-titled new album “Gang Of Losers.”

Because the wonderfully arrogantly-titled “Ticket To Immortality” positively reeks of class. As urgent as hell, it’s built upon huge, rolling drums, keyboards wafting in from the Urals, dense layers of guitars (Phil Spector mixes “Shoplifters Of The World Unite” anyone?) and backing vocals from only slightly south of heaven and by God it’s intoxicating.   Indeed, by the time a smitten Murray Lightburn gushes his way to the song’s starry-eyed “the world is really gonna love you” chorus/ conclusion, it’s difficult to deny the sentiment where his fantastic group are concerned.

The sound of a band going thrillingly over the top of the trenches, “Ticket To Immortality” is rousing, anthemic and gives its’ all without exception. It’s a belting way to get re-acquainted with (arguably) Montreal’s finest. Succumbing is the only option.
