Review: 'ALIENS, THE'
'THE HAPPY SONG'

-  Label: 'PET ROCK RECORDS'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '19.09.06'

Our Rating:
If this isn't number one for the next four years then there's something seriously wrong with the world. 'The Happy Song' is the second release from ex-Beta Band members John McLean and Robin Jones new musical vehicle, The Aliens. Fronted by original Beta member Gordon Anderson, these Scottish psychedelic warriors have surely come up with the summer hit of the year.

Full of boundless energy and humour, 'The Happy Song' leaps about like a kid in a playground. Written by Anderson, younger brother of Fence Records head-honcho King Creosote, and better known to some as The Lone Pigeon, the song has long been the staple, anarchic closer at Fence Collective gigs for the past few years, but there's never been a version like this.

Possibly slightly over-produced, the track bounces along with layered vocals, a great boogie-woogie piano as a backbone, before breaking halfway for a stunning little rock'n'roll guitar interlude.

Lyrically, it shouldn't win any Novello's, that's for sure. “I'm happy everyday as I walk around my life, I'm happy everyday even though I'm stuck in Fife.” shouts Anderson, but, that said, if this doesn't instantly make you want to dance around the room, you're either deaf or in your box.

Are you coming on up now? You betcha.
