Review: 'CASINOS, THE'
'Demos'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: 'September 2006'

Our Rating:
Recorded with the multi talented, and very busy DING at the controls (one-time member of The Fall amongst many, many others - and currently playing bass with BOBBIE PERU) this is impressive because it catches the band at their chaotic best. Most of it is live, one take, and has all the more of an edge for that, as none of the vitality is lost from a band whose guttersnipe lives depend on the raw simplicity of their edgy and compulsive sound.

This five-track demo is one to grab hold of, purely because it showcases the band so well, alive and dancing on the frayed nerves of the previous generation. Getting your sticky mitts on it is as easy as turning up to watch this prolific and prodigious quartet in action (they’ll swap you for two quid, of that I’m sure!).

The guitar defies reason to build up a skanking great wall of sound during the stomping ‘Take My Cares Away’, a job that the belting rhythm section does so well as we plunge head first into Barbie country via the thumping great hangover of ‘Riot In St. Peter’s Square’. Machine gun bursts of fire leave their mark on the senses, and shellshock is a necessary hazard as the record progresses, with every sane head running desperately for cover.

Speed-addled speech impediment delivery from front man Sav heralds an all-out declaration of war that turns your eardrums inside out. ‘Pick Your Game Up’ is a gauntlet laid down to the thunderous crash of tight, manic drums, sealed with a bass riff that might just prove too fast for all of us.

There’s also a pearling rendition of every roller’s favourite ‘Drinkin’, which bounces and bobbles forth on a charismatic burst of energy like Oliver Reed, mid-bender, weaving an unsteady path from tap room to off license.

The chemistry at work when this exciting band play live is harnessed brilliantly here in what could pass for a Peel session. The Cassys are almost always playing somewhere at the moment; if they come to your town you must stop them and buy one!
