Although this is louder and Skatier than I’d usually be partial to, there’s no denying that ’20 Yards’ – the debut single from Guildford-based rockers WITHOUT GRACE – is a stormingly powerful little fecker.
Serrated of riff, coiled and venomous of intent and knife-cutting of atmosphere, it’s the sound of a band who are arriving fully-formed and potentially rather fantastic, especially when singer Markus Flaherty comes on like the bastard son of Eddie Vedder glugging on kerosene come the chorus. Oh, and that’s a good thing, in case you were wondering.
The acoustic flip ‘Heart Attack’ can’t quite maintain the standard, though its’ circular riff motion, brooding feel akin to Alice In Chains’ ‘Jar Of Flies’ and Flaherty’s nicotine’n’sludge-quaffing growl are surely impressive once again and overall WG have more than enough presence to make some pretty sizeable waves in the filthy rock’n’roll ocean. Get those lifeboats ready for imminent action.
