Review: 'Mukul'
'Stray'

-  Label: 'SonyBMG India'
-  Genre: 'Hip-Hop'

Our Rating:
Some vital trip-hop on offer here; brooding and minimalistic, "Stray" plays its seedy game like the lost link between Philip Glass and the proto-era B-boys. Lyrically sexual and confrontational, Mukul shows that Indian music isn't all about bright colours and dancing. Buried in the murk of the underground and about 10 foot of grime, "You Don't Know Me" and "Dumb" are the stand-outs on this promising debut.

In terms of criticism, I'd say that perhaps there could be more variation - vocally and musically - but for taking risks, and for playing outside the established box, I'm giving this my surefire support.

Fans of Tricky and readers of leftfield magazines such as The Wire, might find something of interest in the electronic rhyme play here.
