Review: 'HOWLING BELLS'
'Setting Sun'

-  Label: 'Bella Union'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '18th September 2006'-  Catalogue No: 'BellaCD124P2'

Our Rating:
‘Setting Sun’, all off-beat harmonies and melancholy shape throwing, is the third single from the self-titled debut album from Bella Union artists HOWLING BELLS. The chorus hook slides over a drum rolling boost to the atmospheric guitar work and epic sounding if tremolo warped final feel, the band’s reinterpretation of classic country-tinged rock n’ roll.

Also available on 7” Vinyl (the comeback of this classic format always, of course, more than welcome), the CD is backed with ‘Today’, with its acoustic core thickened by backwards tracks, chilled out lead guitars and hesitant vocals adding mystique and depth to an oft abused structure. Shuffling percussion nudges the song gently along until the pauses for effect and off-kilter nature of the vocals scream unconventional beauty (even if the actual words don’t disclose as much).

Solid stuff, and full of intrigue despite the music’s accessibility, it’s easy to understand why Placebo wanted them in support on their current stadium-sized tour. If that doesn’t convince you, then a look at Bella Union’s diverse and fantastic array of talent might do the trick. Despite the likes of FIONN REGAN, THE DEARS and MIDLAKE also featuring on the label’s impressive roster, HOWLING BELLS do not sound out of place as far as quality is concerned.
