Review: 'WHITE STRIPES, THE'
'WHITE BLOOD CELLS'

-  Album: 'WHITE BLOOD CELLS' -  Label: 'SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY'
-  Genre: 'Blues' -  Release Date: '2001'

Our Rating:
Maybe it's a symptom of the malaise eating into the music biz, but at whisperinandhollerin we still think THE WHITE STRIPES are a particularly bizarre outfit to be the subject of the rampant hyperbole they set off in the UK press during the summer tour, when people better suited to writing about bathroom accessories started to hail them as "the future" of rock'n'roll.

Nevertheless, all the hot air shouldn't obscure the fact that Detroit's brother-sister duo Jack and Meg White really are a pretty damned hot little r'n'r combo, very much of the old school and that "WHITE BLOOD CELLS", despite its' obvious nods to the blues (it's dedicated to LORETTA LYNN) and blues-indebted heroes - LED ZEPPELIN especially - was capable of kickin' up its' own thunder away from the feeding frenzy with songs like "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground",the catchy folk of the single "Hotel Yorba" and tender acoustic achievements like "We're Going To Be Friends" well deserving of blue ribands.

The band themselves have expressed concern that their next record will be difficult to make following all this lunacy, but despite signing to XL in the UK for a rumoured 6-figure sum, have recently turned down a potential GAP clothing advert offer and seem determined to retain their fierce independence. Commendable in these cut-throat times. This is still a space worth watching, it seems.
