Our Rating:
Ummmm,...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead: not the catchiest name I have ever heard, nor is it all that inviting, but I have to write a review so I listened to it anyway!
The first word that comes to mind upon hearing this album is inconsistent, not only in quality but in style, the band do not seem to be able to settle on one particular style and so have attempted to try them all, with varied levels of success.

Not only have the band varied stylistically between songs, with a couple they have even attempted to do it in one song. Title track ‘So Divided’ is a reasonable example of this, although too long (6mins 24seconds), on the whole it is a kind of epic guitar ballad, interspersed with a faster choppy chorus. Conversely Naked Sun is a less than victorious attempt. Again too long (6mins 4 seconds) it starts as a marginally bad, country tinged rock song, but then moves onto another long drawn out guitar ballad conclusion, like an Oasis song that Noel just couldn’t quite end!

Admittedly it’s not all bad; I did like the ‘Wasted State of Mind and ‘Sunken Dreams’. But in general the lack of continuity between songs really bugged me; it went from sounding like Genesis or Pink Floyd to something more like Blink 182. Although it is good to have a difference between songs, this seems to take it too extremes and considering this is their 4th album you would think that they could have settled about what genre they wanted to be
