With album "Stuff of Myth and Mystery” still on the go, this belatedly reviewed vinyl single should command some of our attention. A CD can be got.
The main tune has a nicely 80s retro feel for those choppy pop bands who had a piano. Even though they didn’t quite get the punk revolution, they knew they had to snarl it up a bit. There’s a nice organ part too. It could even be the Holland brothers.
The weight of the title does sink it by the end though. More of an unsingable chorus than a title, it needed to be much sharper to join the Nutty Boy classics.
B side “Stranger Still” is a solo lament with some ambient street noise and a solo guitar. It has much more promise, but there really is a huge amount of competition in this market and Alec Basten is only quite good, when life-changingly special seems to be the entry qualification. A bit like M. WARD isn’t really enough.
