The first single by London born, NewYork based DJ to be released from a covers album (out in April ) called, appropriately enough, “Version” is an idiosyncratic take on Britney Spears’ mega-hit from happier days. Britney definitely needs something to cheer her up at the moment but I seriously doubt whether this will do the trick.
Ronson slows the song down and invests with a stax/motown groove which despite his intended aim of giving it some 'bounce' effectively leaves the song de-energised and de-sexed.
Musical castration was certainly not the aim as Ronson clearly has affection for the song but beyond the novelty value I don’t really get the point of it.
The most distinctive touch is to insert one of the cleaner lines - “ooh nigga I’m burnin’ up” - from Lift Ya Skirt by late rapper ODB (Ol’ Dirty Bastard) but it doesn’t rescue it.

Ronson turns pure pop into pure pap which comes as no great surprise for a man who, on MySpace, lists Kermit The Frog among his influences.
The B side of this vinyl release is with a demented big band instrumental version of Coldplay’s God Put A Smile On Your Face (not on my promo CD but it can be heard on My Space if you’re curious).
Personally I was not amused.
