Our Rating:
KING WITH NO THRONE have gone by many monickers throughout their 6 year history before settling on their current one. However, the self-titled opening track of the three here reveals front man Daniel Calvo to be singing “I will never change my name”. Hmm.

This is weighty, atmospheric rock music with a distinctly progressive tint to it, all big drum fills and FX heavy guitar riffs, with a dragging tempo that’s all out for the big old epic delivery. Already drawing comparisons to Pink Floyd, it must be the Barrett-era of which the critics speak.

The synth chimes and bleeps throughout the skipping anti-rhyme ‘Together’, and microcosmic pastoral images are blended with Eastern sounding keyboard hooks. Magik with a K. The off kilter noise that accompanies the surging overloads of feedback is strangely appealing, and the murmured vocals slide in and out of the bottle-hitting jam as if through a mist.

Final offering, the slow-burning instrumental ‘Train’ is even more drenched in buzzing sitar sounds, and chunners along at a pace that would be at stop if it got any faster. It’s as though sonic mirrors have been held at angles to the music, which echoes and bounces in another dense pea-souper. It’s grown-up stuff alright, and possessed with ingredients that will see it appeal to any fans of guitar-driven cosmic ambience. However, others might reject it on the grounds of the overly grandiose way in which it assumes a positively Jurassic standpoint somewhere above the universe.

However, like all things of operatic proportions, there are sounds in here that point towards a solid live show. Currently plying their trade in and around the capital, perhaps with a matching display of lights, there is enough intrigue on this 3-track EP to make checking them out worthwhile.

The wonders of Myspace will allow you to browse straight to the band's page from here, where all three EP tracks are posted for your listening pleasure, along with some rather tasteful photography.
