Our Rating:
Though this release from Manchester electroclashers Bruce Carter and Danny Saville a.k.a. THE WHIP is available on Southern Fried records through itunes and HMV amongst others, the band incredibly are yet to sign a recording deal, and remain unsigned at the time of writing.

‘Muzzle No.1’ (12” vinyl and CD/download) is a hook-heavy fusion of bleeping synth noises held together with a machine driven bassline and echo-deck guitar riffs. Building up to euphoric relentlessness, the record is defiant and groove-orientated in equal measures as it weaves its hypnotic spell along the full legnth of the crazy-paved path that leads to dancefloor euphoria.

Screaming mental anguish and a twisting, turning reluctance to succumb to claustrophobia emit from the core along with the bleeping pulse. The uplifting energy is a marriage of techno structures and nonconformist inner strength. This absolute refusal to settle is something reflected perfectly by the heartbeat of dance elements.

There are four mixes here, including a radio edit and two BLACK GHOST remixes (one instrumental) that highlight the techno-driven core of the track with high-frequency tweaking, sparse additions to the pots n pans percussion together with effective use of reverb. There’s also the odd reverse track thrown in for good measure. Without the vocals, the trance-inducing qualities are beautifully exposed. With them, it’s a ‘chains-off’ free-for-all that celebrates personal freedom.

“Drop The Leash/ I’ve Been Released” is one assertion, and the stubborn ethos brims with anti-establishment leanings all the way to its bubbling steam-like crescendo. The fact that the pace is not going off like alarms at full-pelt allows the subtleties of construction to shine, and the remixes showcase the track’s sparsity where the original is bolstered by the intriguing presence of a little rock n roll. This heightens the potential for a blistering live show that sees the personnel double to make a four-piece touring outfit.

This is something we have a chance to check out for ourselves as well, as THE WHIP are currently purveying their dance/rock fusion up and down the UK as well as overseas until well into April.
