Review: 'MAXIMO PARK'
'Our Velocity'

-  Label: 'Warp Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '19th March 2007'-  Catalogue No: 'WAP220CD'

Our Rating:

‘Our Velocity’ precludes the long-awaited second MAXIMO PARK album ‘Our Earthly Pleasures’ by a fortnight, a Gil-Norton produced, self-proclaimed slice of “Rock without the Cliches”.

The second track of that album crashes into view, cutting to the quick with an instantly addictive swipe at egotism and pseudo-intellectual leanings. Cod-accented refrains sit pretty within the amphetamine pulse as the clarity of the overall record skits from melody to melody – it’s an overload of beautifully unsettled proportions.

Subterrenean supercharged atmospherics burn the finished article deep into the conscious mind and then cast it adrift on a sea of paranoia, as the crystal clarity of the production gives the whole thing a cut-glass elegance.

“Never ever try to gauge temperature when you tend to travel at such speeeed” howls vocalist Paul Smith as the yodelling frontman’s insanity rises and rises with the surging, spiralling momentum.
A mouth-watering foretaste of what should be a superb long-player, this addictive, bullshit-free hit in the making is a winner in every sense of the word.
