Erdem Helvacioglu is one of the most renowned electronic music composers of his generation in Turkey. His music has been performed and broadcast all around the world. His compositions have been included in many prestigious festivals and he has won numerous international awards for his electronic music. Erdem Helvacioglu performs his music worldwide and produces major acts in Turkey.
His album “Altered Realities” is an album of solo acoustic guitar and live electronics. All of the compositions were recorded in real-time without any overdubs, mixing or editing. All of the textures were created based only on the acoustic guitar signal with no other sounds used during the recording.
It's all very impressive work and his commitment to his music is outstanding, the music itself is extremely abstract mainly because of the constraints of working in this way, it is multi layered in sound and texture which is an impressive achievement because the source of the sounds being the same instrument. Overall, I have to say that I was impressed by the effort and the concept of it but felt that the end result was a little bit too challenging to find particularly enjoyable personally. I wonder whether it would have been a more enjoyable proposition if there weren't so many constraints and restriction on the way it was created. In my opinion music is all about the end result, and how the listener enjoys and reacts to it, not how it was created which I feel has possibly been sacrificed here. However if anyone out there is up for some top quality, challenging and impressive experimental ambient music then this is going to be the thing for you!
