Review: 'JOHNSON, BENITA'
'Stars & Fireflies (ep)'

-  Label: 'Self released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '26th March 2007'

Our Rating:
Google Benita Johnson and you'll find a profile of one of Australia's top middle distance runners. Benita the singer is from Bristol in the UK and more middle of the road than middle distance.

The six acoustic songs on this ep are pleasant yet undemanding.
The easy listening style draws obvious comparisons to Dido and James Blunt.

Unfortunately, like those singers, what passes for romantic song writing frequently crosses into sickly sweet sentimentality. You'll find her 'chasing rainbows' and 'thanking angels' and reflecting on how beautiful her loved one is. The bluesy final track 'Tattoo' has a little more depth but otherwise this is fairly safe Radio 2 territory.

The songs would probably be better if opened out a little - just the acoustic guitar accompaniment gets a bit claustrophobic after 20 minutes.

Still it's a nice unimposing dinner party soundtrack if that's your bag.
