Our Rating:

One of two releases from Huddersfield Social Enterprise THE TIMELESS MUSIC PROJECT, who aim to encourage community cohesion through music and support networks for the independent music sector, and for the past two years have been causing a stir at the SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas. Whilst the other compilation features a range of Bradford-based artists who are currently seeking a label, this one sees twelve West Yorkshire independents represented by a wide range of talented acts.

Highlights include Broke Records’ THE AUTOBOTS and their head-mashing acid-trance-out ‘This World’, and Chocolate Fireguard sensations KAVA KAVA with their restless, shimmering take on mind-games and psychological mayhem, ‘Forwards’.

Hip-hop comes correct via a triple helping. Timeless faves PRACTICAL HEADZ and their darkened jam ‘Stop The Diction’. Klinik Records are also represented with the prodigious JACK FLASH, whose audacious rhyme ‘Living Legend’ blends a fair amount of skill in the freestyle with lines like ‘I battle like I’m losing my life/Throwing punches like a pissed-up husband abusing his wife’. There’s more truth than misogyny in this assertion, and the track makes for fine listening. LA CEDILLE closes matters with the smooth and loungy ‘Dissident D’ici’, with a beautiful blast of sweet soul from RACHEL MODEST.

Another gem comes from ROGUE STATE featuring BONGO CHILLI (Bongo Chilli Records). Their massive soundsystem bass and half-silly skank ‘Sound Like’ is delivered against a backdrop of sitar and church clock chimes, a punishing tune that brings a daft grin to the expression.

Alamo’s introspective wonders FOUR-DAY HOMBRE weigh in with ‘Daylight Came’, and JOHN GOMM (Performing Chimp) all but steals the show with his beautifully played-out acoustic tapestry ‘Afterglow’. LARA ROSE fights him for the honour with an organ driven modern soul classic, the beautifully uplifting ‘Once Beloved’

With Leeds music scene sensations SHUT YOUR EYES AND YOU’LL BURST INTO FLAMES and THE SUGARS also featured alongside the likes of Wrath contenders THE SCARAMANGA SIX and On The Bone’s MOTHER VULPINE, it’s a welcome mixture of talent and a real treat for the ears that unfolds. As an advertisement for the wealth of original music to be found in West Yorkshire, Timeless Music Project and all the artists concerned must consider this compilation to be a resounding success
