Our Rating:
What on earth would Captain Sensible make of this lot?

This, the fifth single taken from the album Strange House, enjoys all of the benefits of the acknowledged Goth sound without reverting to the gloomy, despairing traits of many of its musical cousins.

Instead we are invited to a kind of latter-day Monster Mash complete with groaning organ accompaniment, a creeping spider of a bass line and a vocalist who, much like Bobby ‘Boris’ Picket doesn’t actually sing. A shuffling backbeat courtesy of the splendidly named Coffin Joe completes the macabre effect.

But does it work? Well, yes it does. Rather well as it happens. She Is The New Thing doesn’t bat an eyelid at the more conventional pop music sounds, preferring instead to chug along at a tempo of its own sinister creation.

Its impossible though, not to make mention of The Damned when discussing The Horrors and it is clear that they wear the influence proudly on their coffin lids. Fortunately, like the horror-punk legends, they do inject a healthy dose of fun into their music, thus proving, perhaps once and for all, that even Goths have a sense of humour.
