Our Rating:
"Down with miserable retroism, hurray for the beautiful machine” reads the biography of TO MY BOY: this electronic obsessed duo from the north of England. Sounds like a recipe for experimentation and a resounding ‘boo!’ to the likes of Lenny Kravitz and his crusade to mine the 70’s for inspiration.

Well it would do if To My Boy hadn’t accidentally leant on the Retro button and headed back to the very early 80’s themselves. Obvious comparisons with Devo abound, but there’s more than a touch of Depeche Mode in the mix too.

Conceptually, the track concerns the creation of a model so incredibly precise and beautiful that its creator is left ruined and despondent with his lot. It could quite easily be an allegory on the nature of celebrity and its effect on public consciousness – the beautiful figure presented before its creator displaying everything that the creator can never himself be.

Of course, it may be far more superficial than that…ahem.
Pseudo-intellectual ramblings aside, this is far too esoteric (and, yes, retro) to really convince as a genuine contender for great pop songs of the noughties and may just serve as a novelty at best.
