Review: 'CLONE QUARTET'
'Carousel/Played To Death'

-  Label: 'Tigertail(www,clonequartet.com)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th May 2007'-  Catalogue No: 'GRRR13'

Our Rating:

It’s the off-key lurch of the bass, minimalist rock riff and the shock tactic burst of distortion that makes ‘Played To Death’ the pick of the two tracks in this latest indie experiment with 80’s synths from the CLONE QUARTET. However, even these elements are upstaged by the cartoon duel at the end with the synth busting some show-stopping moves to wipe the floor with the guitar, along with a galloping automatic bass riff. Synth, now in full church organ mode, and bass then go head to head to the death.

Both tracks shift tempo several times, incorporating elements of grunge, indie and 80’s pop in a very jerky fashion indeed. ‘Carousel’ sounds like a retro computer game score written by The Field Mice, but has a definite against-the-odds and grows on you without having the same sense of fun or crazed energy of ‘Played..’

Currently on a whistle-stop tour of the UK gives you a chance to judge for yourself: these Belfast electro-indie rockers are at their experimental best when playing live
