Following three single releases on indie label Kids, Liverpool 3-piece THE WOMBATS celebrate their 14th floor debut with ‘Kill The Director’. Machine-gun drumming and shocks of rapid-fire guitar pepper the jerky falsetto harmonies during this don’t-stop-for-breath take on ‘life as a soap opera’, as the trio demonstrate an undoubted studio knack to match the energy of their live shows superbly. Handclapping, anger and confusion, with a second’s music box pause for thought, the lead vocals are slick and insistent and the record is both absorbing and very catchy indeed.
Backed with the alternative cabaret ‘The Metro Song’ - that at one point is awash with insane barbershop vocals, boosted with a hefty rock n roll kick - THE WOMBATS take a Victoria Wood/daytime TV sense of the tongue-in cheek and plough it brains-first into a crashing semi-accidental racket. The end results are oddly charming and guaranteed to bring a smile to your lips.
