Review: 'KENT, SIMON'
'Spaced Out Refugee'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: 'September 1st 2007'

Our Rating:
Hailing from Portsmouth, SIMON KENT spent his childhood as a soloist in a renowned male voice choir. He can certainly hit the high notes, and consequently sounds slightly like what Aled Jones might have done, had he absconded "Songs of Praise" and started singing Mansun. It's an interesting concept.

It is easy to discern Kent's classical training - there is a smooth sophistication in his arrangements that lifts his songs above your Average Indie Joes. There is also a very worthy "Space Odyssey" feel in the mix - his songs are genuinely massive, and bloom organically to fill your brain.

"Spaced Out Refugee" is an apt title for his self-released single, that embraces the trippy, detached atmosphere that he conjures, like the soundtrack to a comfortable come-down after a highly weird evening.

Kent is also an avid environmentalist, a passionate supporter of animal rights, and he sponsors a child somewhere in the Developing World. Not that this has anything to do with his single, but it makes us like him even more.

If you want to check out his deliciously airy brand of indie pop, "Spaced Out Refugee" will be available to download from his website as of September 1st.
