Our Rating:

Media darlings THE WOMBATS bring us more Prozac pop in the form of new single ‘Let’s Dance To Joy Division’.

This sighing ode to carefree student days lurches and sways precariously as momentum gathers drunkenly. Progressing, it’s like having the rug pulled from underneath your feet, but the synchronised swimmer delivery keeps those pearly whites flashing throughout.

This trio’s assurance that it’s on the darker side where they’re to be found is hard to believe – by the time the children’s chorus appears, the notion is positively unfathomable – but the shameless optimism that keeps the classic ‘busy’ sound of a three man group sounding vital here is alluring. Faith in the pop muse, together with a dynamic onstage delivery honed down over a year and more of relentless touring has seen these oddly-named beggars move towards the centre of attention. This follow-up to 14th floor debut ‘Kill The Director’ carries the same key aspects of their characteristic (happy-pill) animated state.

What dear old Ian Curtis might make of this relentless etched grin at the futile collapse of the world around us remains unclear – probably as unclear as the irony in dancing to Joy Division is to a non-undergrad. But hell, this is pop music, and the heartbeat is strong.
