Review: 'TUCKER LITTLE, STEPHANIE'
'Where Seashells Dance'

-  Album: 'Where Seashells Dance' -  Label: 'self (www.stephanietuckerlittle.com)'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2007'

Our Rating:
Opening with an instrumental that includes (uncredited) phrases from "Both Sides Now", Stephanie Tucker Little presents her first record. A gentle collection, mostly of covers, these songs give equal prominence to her guitar playing and her warm, polite singing. The choice of songs is eclectic: three Beatles songs, the Tennessee Waltz and Big Yellow Taxi indicates the range of her musical affections.

For all the warmth and skill of her playing, however, there is throughout the sense that she does not produce a performance of each song as a whole; "Love Me Tender", for example, sounds like Presley-by-numbers, whilst her take on Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" loses momentum at odd moments, and without that momentum is rather lost as a piece of entertainment. "I Still Miss Someone", the Johnny Cash song, is so well crafted and neat, but again the flow of it is stalled here, and the beauty lost.

Still, she has her followers, judging by the strength of the applause on the one live track; as with Daniel O'Donnell, there's plenty of enthusiasm out there for familiar music with it's best manners on.

I wonder if Mr. Davy really listened to this CD, since he didn't even get the title right. In any case, I disagree with him. The album is excellent, the arrangements are fresh and beautifully executed, and the original offerings are great.

Maybe he should try again. Years ago, I bought John Barleycorn Must Die (Traffic) on the advice of a cousin. I listened to it, and thought, so what? Then, a few months later, I got it out, and listened to it again. This time, I loved it.
