You can separate homegrown talent Alex Fry (http://alexfry.co.uk) from her singer/songwriter peers with her voice alone, which has a fragile little-girl vibe to it, especially on the opener, "Weakness." In fact, Fry reminds me of Kate Bush in her earliest recording years on that track. While Fry's music isn't as quirky and experimental as Bush's, vocally they do have a curious link.
Since "Like Gold Dust on My Soul" is only a five-track EP, we're just given a glimpse of what Fry is truly capable of. Lyrically Fry is best heard than read. On paper, her words seem like diary entries without rhythm and melody; once she sings them, though, they take on new life. Fry's voice is her strongest asset. In the acoustic-pop genre, you don't often hear singing this sensitive and dreamy anymore. "Dorothy Jenvey" reminds me of Frente! because of Fry's vocals and the mellow, unplugged arrangements although Fry avoids the pop element from that group completely. The lovelorn "Knight in Shining Armour" adds violin to Fry's vocals, and it's quite pretty.

Given that "Like Gold Dust on My Soul" is so short, there's not much else to say about the record except that Fry is definitely a promising talent. I enjoyed the tracks here on different levels, and I'm looking forward to what she will produce next.
