Review: 'MPD'
'FRUITS OF THE FOREST (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'December 2007'

Our Rating:
On first listen, there seems to be something about MPD. The opening track of this 'Fruits of the Forest EP' make you think that the Prestonian might have hit the nail on the head when it comes to makes beautiful, soulful music. 'Electric' is an epic number, an orchestral wail with vocals that would at least glean the interest of a few Jeff Buckley fans. It's a powerful number that unfortunately stretches on to a little over five minutes, and by this point you've heard enough.

Does three tracks really constitute an EP, is the pedants question of the week? The answer is no, and the reality is that this is a single with two b-sides, the way b-sides used to be – less impressive than the lead track and only really there to make up the numbers. 'The First Time' is a directionless ballad that is attempting to be a big indie number. MPD's theatrical voice is unsuited to this type of song and it comes out as merely awkward. 'Refrain' picks up the Jeff Buckley theme but does little to restore interest. It's a good voice, it's pretty unique, and it complements more classical numbers – for the foray into the world of the indie standard makes for disinteresting listening.
