The seventh release showcases the talented Camden artist EMMY THE GREAT, whose double helping of quirk-laden folk treads the same stretch of vocal and lyrical water as Bella Union’s ‘eye-in-the-sky’ sensation FIONN REGAN. Unlike the majority of free download offerings, this is a must-listen total bargain.
Four makeshift chords quick-change on a battered classical guitar during ‘Hold On’, for a folk sound that might sound sketchy and home-made, but is therefore all the better for showcasing E.T.G.’s gorgeous voice, which is right on the money. The one-line chorus ensures that the song’s message is crystal-clear, whilst highly melodic vocal harmonies breathe life into the song’s DIY simplicity. It’s lovely!

Backed with ‘Paper Trails’, we hear a winding narrative reach breakneck speed as Emmy’s vocal dexterity takes over. Punctuated by the singer’s sharp intake of breath, the lyrics are truly surreal and offer platefuls of food for thought as the levels of intrigue are kept sky high.
All in all, this is compelling and hopelessly addictive. I felt it growing on me with each listen, until after three or four plays, I loved it!
