Review: 'OLD ROMANTIC KILLER BAND, THE'
'You Don't Know How To Love / Things To Come'

-  Label: 'Bad Sneakers Records (CD, vinyl and download)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'March 10 2008'-  Catalogue No: 'BADSNEAK11CD'

Our Rating:
Bad Sneakers really must have some kind of well-calibrated sonar detection instrument, tucked away in one of their murk-filled Leeds premises. Up North, where the rock and the roll are thick on the streets.

This time they have chased down THE OLD ROMANTIC KILLER BAND, who (on this evidence) are an agreeably noisy duo. Harry Johns and drummer Bunse nonchalantly kick a van full of petrol cans down the fire escape and make a very fine din. Their planned gigs with VON BONDIES and appearances at 2008's SXSW in Texas hint at the ambitions.

Johns puts a mighty singing voice up against precisely simple garage band aesthetics and lashes out with White Stripes right across the band's Buckley blues. Their bass-end guitar sound (right at the beginning of "You Don't Know How To Love") rattles fit to make your teeth fall out. Being able to play and having an ear for a fresh sound on a classic guitar/drums format are virtues that travel a long way. I like this.

Where "You Don't Know How To Love" brazens it out double-time, "Things To Come" has Zeppelin cordite drifting in its lurching wake. A dirty love song for people with explosive tastes.
